RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls women's basketball started out their 2017-18 season with a 58-52 non-conference win over Carleton College in their home opener.

WHAT HAPPENED
- The Knights took control of the first quarter scoring the first point and maintaining the lead until the Falcons tied it up 10-10 at 2:33 on a good free throw by Anna Rollag.
- The Falcons would go on a four point run to finish the first quarter up 14-10.
- In the second quarter, the Knights again took control making up some ground tying it up 14-14 at 8:24.
- Jaycie Gerding would put the brakes on the Knights run with a three pointer that would set the Falcons up for a 13 point run.
- Brynn Liljander scored a three pointer at 1:45 to secure the Falcons first half lead as they headed into the halftime break.
- Liljander led the first half with 14 points. She was 5-10 from the floor and was 3-6 above the arc.
- The Falcons started the second half out increasing their lead to 23 up before the Knights offense put up 11 straight points.
- The Knights finished out the third quarter slimming the Falcon lead to nine.
- The fourth quarter proved to be the most challenging for the Falcons as they saw their dominating lead fall within four points of the Knights.
- Senior guard Brynn Liljander took the final minutes of the game into her own hands scoring the last five points of the game and giving the Falcons their opening night win.
- In the second half, the leading scorer was Liljander with 10 points on 3-7 shooting. Rau added eight points, including 3-4 from the floor and 2-3 from the free throw line.
IN-DEPTH LOOK
- Liljander would finish with a game-high 24 points on 8-17 shooting. She added seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals to her totals. She needed 21 points to break the 1000 career points.
- Taylor Karge would have a strong first half scoring nine points. She was 3-7 from the floor and was 2-2 at the line.
- Hayley Rau was 3-6 from the floor with eight points, she also had four rebounds.
- Jaycie Gerding came off the bench and had seven points. She was 3-6 from the floor and was 1-3 from the arc.
- As a team, UW-River Falls shot 20-50 (40.0 percent) from the floor. UWRF was 6-19 (31.6 percent) from the three point line and connected on 12-18 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
THE OPPOSITION
- The Knights shot 16-60 (26.7 percent) from the floor and connected on five threes on 18 attempts in the game.
- Carleton had two players in double figures. Their leading scorer was Katie Chavez with 17 points on 4-19 shooting. She also was 7-7 from the free throw line.
- Samantha Cooke scored 15 points on 6-11 shooting.
- Anne Hamilton had a game high 10 rebounds.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons host St. Olaf and St. Norbert in the UWRF Tournament this upcoming weekend. First game for the Falcons will be against St. Olaf College on Friday night with tip off starting at 7:30 p.m. The Falcons will play St. Norbert Saturday at 3 p.m.
