Whitewater, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls softball team traveled to Whitewater, Wis. to play UW-Eau Claire in the first game of the WIAC Softball on Friday morning.
Amber Galloway drove in a run for the Falcons and
Hannah Stegeman gave up just 2 runs over 5 innings of work, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons fell to the Blugolds 2-1. The Falcons went on to play UW-Stout later in the day to try to advance to play on Saturday.
Game 2 vs UW-Stout- play has been suspended until 9am Saturday morning due to darkness. The game will resume with the Falcons coming up to bat in the top of the 8
th inning with the score tied at 5.

WHAT HAPPENED IN GAME 1 VS UW-Eau Claire
- Aiyana Ledwein got things going early for the Falcons, leading off the top of the 1st with a double. Ledwein moved to third when Molly Kaspar singled to left. The next three Falcon batters were retired in order and could not get the run across as the score stayed tied at 0.
- The Blugolds started quick in the bottom of the 1st with a lead-off double. The Falcons retired the next two batters, but a walk and consecutive singles by the Blugolds forced in two runs as they took a 2-0 lead.
- The Falcons threatened in their half of the third inning. Ali Krohn, Ledwein and Kaspar hit three straight singles to load the bases with nobody out. Kaia Dorn popped up to the short stop who caught it and threw to third to double off Krohn. Senour was hit by a pitch and the Falcons had the bases loaded again with 2 outs. Maddie Studnicka hit a fly ball to left and the Falcons could not get a run across, and still trailed 2-0.
- The Falcon pitching and defense stepped up over the next few innings making some great defensive plays, including catching a base runner trying to steal. The Blugolds did not get a runner past second base until the 6th inning.
- The Falcons pressured again in the 6th inning, when Senour led off with a single. Rachel Renz pinch ran for Senour and was moved to second by Shannan Borchardt. Galloway stepped in and drove a single to right center to bring in Renz and bring the Falcons within 1 at 2-1.
- Studnicka came into pitch for the Falcons in the 6th and got out of a jam to keep the Falcons down just 1 run.
- The Falcons went down in order in the top of the 7th and fell to the Blugolds by a final score of 2-1.
- Stegeman pitched well for the Falcons giving up just 2 runs in 5 innings on 5 hits.
