Superior, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team looked to move on in the WIAC tournament as they traveled to take on UW-Superior in game 2 of their first-round series.
Cayden Cahill scored 2 goals and
Zach Quinn made 41 saves to help the Falcons get the 3-3 tie, which is all they needed, as the Falcons won the series against UW-Superior and move onto the WIAC semifinal round.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Cayden Cahill found on the back of the net just 1:09 into the first period. The goal was Cahill's 12th of the season.
- The Falcons just missed taking a 2-0 lead when Eddie Matsushima's shot hit the post around the 5-minute mark of the period.
- The Yellowjackets would tie the game at 1, when Troy York found the back of the net at the 6:10 mark of the period.
- There was action at both ends of the ice over the next 10 minutes of the period.
- At the 16:46 mark of the period Bruno Birzitis was assessed a 5-minute major penalty for contact to the head and was also given a game misconduct penalty.
- The Falcons went on a power play for the rest of the period but were unable to break the 1-1 tie as the period ended, but the Falcons would start the second period with almost 2 minutes of power play time remaining.
- The second period began with the Falcons on the power play, but they could not find the back of the net as the power play expired at the 1:46 mark of the period.
- Not long after the power play ended, Aussie Miller put the Falcons up 2-1, with his 3rd goal of the season. He was assisted on the goal by Eddie Matsushima.
- The Falcons would get into some penalty trouble in the middle of the period. At the 9:49 mark of the period Mitchell Vanderburg was called for cross-checking.
- Just six seconds after the Falcons killed off the Vanderburg penalty, they were called for too many men on the ice and the Yellowjackets went back on the power play.
- The Yellowjackets took advantage of the second consecutive power play and tied the game up at 2, at the 13:42 mark of the period.
- The Falcons went on the power play late in the period but could not break the 2-2 tie.
- After the power play the Yellowjackets took a 3-2 lead, when Troy York scored his second goal of the game with just 49 seconds left in the period.
- The third period began with the Falcon penalty killers being tested multiple times.
- The Yellowjackets went on an early power play just 1:14 into the period when Cayden Cahill was called for hooking. Zach Quinn made three saves on the power play to keep the Falcons within 1 at 3-2.
- Just after the Falcons killed off the Cayhill penalty, Thomas Clayton was called for tripping at the 3:51 mark of the period. Quinn made two saves on the Yellowjackets during the power play as the Falcons killed off a second power play to stay within a goal.
- The Falcons got a chance on the power play at the 8:37 mark of the period when Alec Mackenzie was called for high sticking. The Falcons generated a couple of shots on net but could not tie the game at 3.
- The Falcons would go on the power play again at the 12:37 mark of the period but could not take advantage and still trailed 3-2.
- With just over 3 minutes remaining in the game, Cayden Cahill found the back of the net to tie the game at 3. The goal was Cahill's 2nd of the game and 13th of the season. He was assisted on the goal by Mithell Vanderburg and Joe Drapluk.
- The third period ended with the score tied at 3 and the game headed into overtime.
- The Yellowjackets pushed hard in the overtime period, but Zach Quinn stood tall in the Falcon net. The Yellowjackets pressured early and Quinn made two early saves to keep the game going.
- Things got very intense for the Falcons just over half way through the overtime period when the Yellowjackets pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.
- The Yellowjackets kept the puck in the Falcon end. David Landau and Aussie Miller blocked shots, and Zach Quinn made three saves to keep the game tied at 3.
- To make things more interesting for the Falcons, Terry Leabo was called for tripping with 42 seconds left in the overtime period, giving the Yellowjackets a 6 on 4 power play with the extra attacker for the last 42 seconds of the period.
- Zach Quinn stood tall and saved the final two shots as the Falcons held on for the 3-3 tie to move on to the next round of the WIAC tournament.
- Quinn made 41 saves in total, including 7 in the overtime period.
- The Falcons were outshot in the game, but in the third period when the Falcons needed a goal they outshot the Yellowjackets 17-12.
THE OPPOSITION
- Troy York led the way for the Yellowjackets with 2 goals and 11 shots on net.
- The Yellowjackets racked up over 40 minutes in penalties including two 10-minute misconduct penalties and a game misconduct penalty.
- Cole Skinner made 21 saves in net for the Yellowjackets.
