Women's Basketball Defeated by No. 16 Titans

Oshkosh, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team traveled to face No. 16 UW-Oshkosh and couldn't come home with the upset in a 73-53 loss.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Early in the game the Falcons kept pace with the conference leading Titans, but a 21-10 second quarter put the Falcons in a hole that they could not dig out of.
  • The Falcons scored the first four points of the game with Crystal Pearson scoring the first bucket in her first career start for UWRF.
  • UW-Oshkosh quickly scored nine of the next 11 points to take a three point lead, and would hold a 15-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Falcons offense sputtered in the second quarter. The Titans scored the first eight points of the quarter and held a 23-11 lead with 6:57 left in the half.
  • Hannah Pignato scored seven points off the bench to lead the Falcons in the first half, but UWRF trailed 36-21 at the break.
  • In the third quarter the Falcons scored the first bucket to bring the lead to 13 points, but the rest of the quarter was all Titans. UWRF scored sporadically in the quarter, but at the end would trail by 22.
  • UWRF outscored the Titans in the fourth quarter, 21-19. The Falcons got five points in the quarter from leading scorer Taylor Karge.          
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Theisen scored her points efficiently for UWRF. She shot 4-8 from the floor in just 12 minutes.  
  • Karge struggled offensively for UWRF, but finished with nine points, and 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks.
  • Pignato finished with eight points on 2-3 shooting, she scored four points at the free throw line. Katie Messman added nine points, and Taylor Paulsrud scored seven.
  • From the floor, the Falcons shot 17-46 (37 percent) from the floor. The Falcons made just one three pointers.
  • UWRF was at the free throw line often in the game. The Falcons shot 18-28 (64. 3 percent) from the line.

THE OPPOSITION
  • The Titans got their scoring in a balanced effort. Emma Melotik scored 14 points, Eliza Campbell scored 12, and Alex Richard scored 10.
  • The Titans were also at the line often in the game. UW-Oshkosh shot 25-30 (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
  • From the field, UW-Oshkosh shot 21-48 (43.8 percent) while making six threes in 18 attempts.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons will return home to face UW-Stout on February 8 at 7 p.m. The Falcons last meeting with the Blue Devils ended in a 70-68 win for UWRF.
