Women's Basketball Falls Short in Upset Attempt of No. 10 Titans

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team played host to the No. 10 UW-Oshkosh Titans and lost a tough game at home

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons did not outscore the Titans in any quarter, but kept pace throughout most of the game scoring no less than four points less than the Titans in each quarter.
  • In the first quarter, the Falcons and Titans exchanged the lead seven times and the game looked like it could be a close one throughout. The Titans outscored UWRF 9-3 in the final 3 minutes of the quarter to hold a 19-15 lead.
  • UWRF would respond to a 10-2 run that the Titans opened up the second quarter with. The Falcons would go on to hold the Titans to two points in the final 4:25 of the quarter and went into halftime down 31-25.
  • In the Falcons run at the end of the second quarter, junior forward Taylor Karge scored all eight of the Falcons final points. Karge would finish with 14 points in the first half.
  • No. 10 UW-Oshkosh would hold off UWRF in the third frame. The Titans scored the first bucket of the quarter and held off UWRF, not allowing them to come any closer than seven points during the quarter.
  • The fourth quarter was similar to the third quarter for the Falcons. Every bucket was matched by the Titans and the Falcons couldn't come close enough to pull off the upset at Karges falling 65-55 at the final buzzer.       
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Karge finished with a game-high 19 points on 7-13 shooting, with three three-pointers. She also gathered four rebounds and dished out three assists.
  • Taylor Paulsrud was the second Falcon in double-figures in the game scoring 10 points.
  • Three UWRF players also had six points. Hannah Pignato, Kate Theisen, and Mikaela Wilson combined to shoot 7-18 to each reach six points.
  • The Falcons finished with 34 rebounds, fairly even with the Titans who finished with 37.
  • As a team the Falcons shot 20-56 (35.7 percent) from the field. The team collectively hit seven three pointers in the contest.

THE OPPOSITION
  • UW-Oshkosh used a balanced offensive attack to win the game. Eliza Campbell was the lone Titan in double-figures with 11 points on 3-9 shooting.
  • Five other players for UW-Oshkosh scored seven or more points with Alex Richard highlighting those players with nine points on 4-8 shooting.
  • From the floor, UW-Oshkosh was 23-52 (44.2 percent) and connected on six of their three point attempts.

UW-River Falls will next travel the short distance to Menomonie, Wisconsin to take on UW-Stout (5-12, 1-5 WIAC) on January 25th with a tip off set for 7 p.m.
