RIVER FALLS, Wis. – (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team hosted UW-Stevens Point in the Commissioner Cup Final at Hunt Arena Saturday night. The Falcons would go down 3-0, only to comeback to tie the game at 3 to force overtime. The Pointers scored 2:35 seconds into the second over time to win the Commissioner's Cup.
The first period began and ended with the Pointers putting tremendous pressure on the Falcons in their own end. The Pointers continued to generate quality scoring chances and fired numerous shots at the Falcon net, but
Tanner Milliron with some great goaltending kept the game tied early.
The Pointers continued pressure finally paid off at the 8:11 mark of the period. The Pointers won a faceoff in the Falcon end and worked it back to Alex Brooks who fired a shot from the point that beat Milliron stick side to put the Pointers up 1-0.
After the goal the Pointers would continue to pressure but the Falcon defense and goaltender were up to the challenge. The Falcons spent most of the period playing defense in their own end, but
Tanner Milliron kept them from going down 2 goals.
The first period ended with the Falcons down 1-0. The Pointers out shoot the Falcons 17 to 3 in the period. The Falcons blocked 6 attempted shots in the period.
The second period began much like the first, with the Pointers controlling the play. The Falcons pushed back early and often in the 2
nd period getting more chances in the offensive end and generating some chances of their own but they could not tie the score at 1.
The Pointers would strike at the 6:13 mark of the period when Drew Graves scooped up a rebound in front and slid the puck past
Tanner Milliron to put the Pointers up 2-0.
The Falcons would get a great opportunity to cut into the Pointer lead less than a minute later when Point was called for hooking.
The Falcons generated some quality scoring chances during the power play, but could not pull within a goal. The Falcon power play was cut short 18 seconds at the 8:37 mark when
Joe Drapluk was called for tripping.
The Falcon penalty killers stepped up once again on the penalty kill, not allowing Point to sustain any pressure or generate any really quality scoring chances.
The Falcons would continue to answer Point's pressure with their own, as the action went from end to end.
Tanner Milliron kept the Falcons down just two making a couple of huge saves late in the period. The Falcons and Pointers both registered 8 shots on goal in the second period.
The Falcons came out in the third period and picked up their physicality and aggressiveness. The Pointers would strike first in the period at the 3:12 mark. Kyle Sharkey beat
Tanner Milliron to put the Pointers up 3-0.
The Falcons would respond in a huge way after the goal. The Falcons would come back all the way to tie the game at 3, after scoring 3 straight goals in less than 3 minutes.
The first Falcon goal came at the 6:45 mark of the period when
Alex Murphy centered a puck from behind the Pointer net right on Christain George's stick who fired a shot to the back of the net. The goal was George's 8
th on the season and the assist was Murphy's 6
th on the season.
The second Falcon goal came just under two minutes later at the 9:27 mark of the period, when
Eddie Matsushima centered a puck from the corner and
Zach Schrotenboer fired it low glove side and beat the Pointer net minder to put the Falcons down just 1. The goal was Zach's 10
th on the season.
The third Falcon goal came less than a minute later at the 10:17 mark when
Alex Murphy again centered a pass to
Danny Hamburg who fired it into the back of the net. The goal tied the game at 3.
After the game was tied the action went from end to end with both teams generating scoring chances, but the Falcons dominated puck possession and pressure for the rest of the period. The third period ended in a 3-3 tie and the Championship game would go into overtime. The Falcons out shot the Pointers 9-7 in the third period.
With the third period ending in a 3-3 tie, in Championship hockey the game goes to 20 minute sudden death overtime periods until someone scores, one of the most exciting things to watch in all of sports and the overtime period lived up to the expectation.
The Falcons spent the first 32 seconds on the overtime on the penalty kill. The Falcon penalty killers did a great job of not allowing the Pointers to get any sustained pressure on their power play.
After the abbreviated power play, the action went from end to end with both teams firing shots at the other team net whenever they could. Both goaltenders made some great saves to keep the game going. The Falcons picked up their physicality again and it seemed to generate them the better scoring chances throughout the over time.
The first over time period ended with both teams registering 11 shots on net. The Pointers attempted 26 while the Falcons attemped 23, each team blocked multiple shots before they go to their respective goaltenders.
The second overtime began with the Pointers taking control and pressuring the Falcons. The Falcons got caught in their own zone and at the 2:35 mark of the second over time period Lawrence Cornellier took a pass from the Kyle Sharkey and fired a shot to the back of the net to give the Pointers the 4-3 victory in double overtime.

Tanner Milliron was great in goal for the Falcons, stopping 41 of 45 shots on goal. The Pointers out shot the Falcons 45 to 27.
