Box Score Superior, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team traveled to UW-Superior Tuesday night for their final regular season road game of the year. The Falcons notched two power play goals in the contest, including one less than a minute into the game, but found themselves locked in a tight battle with the Yellowjackets for all 60 minutes of regulation. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the five minute overtime period, as the two teams walked away with a 2-2 tie. The tie moves the Falcons' overall record to 14-6-4 and 4-2-1 in WIAC play.
Things started hot for UWRF as they found themselves on a power play just over 30 seconds into the contest. UW-Superior's Ian Ecklund was whistled for elbowing at the 32 second mark and it only took the Falcons six seconds to take advantage of the situation. Sophomore Terry Leabo pushed the puck past Yellowjacket goaltender Bryce Fink to put River Falls ahead 1-0. Taylor Burden and Zach Schrotenboer were credited with assists on the goal.
Superior evened things up just under ten minutes later when Jordan Neduzak scored at the 9:20 mark to tie the game at 1-1. The two teams battled evenly throughout the rest of the first period and the entire second period as they combined for 42 shots in the first two stanzas. Fink and River Falls goaltender Tanner Milliron were both steady in goal thoughl, keeping the scored knotted at 1-1 heading into the final period.
The third period started similarly to the first period, as Superior was quickly called for a penalty. David Kenney was whistled for tripping at the 2:37 mark, sending UWRF on their fourth power play of the game. Junior forward Christian George took advantage of the man up situation for the Falcons, blasting a shot past Fink at the 3:49 mark and putting the visitors ahead 2-1.
The Falcon lead didn't hang around for long, as Superior's Lukas Denk scored at the 6:18 mark to even the score at 2-2. Neither team could break through in the final 14 minutes, forcing a five minute overtime period.
The Yellowjackets managed to outshoot the Falcons 5-1 in the extra period, but Milliron came away with five saves to keep things even. Neither team managed to score in overtime and the two teams walked away with a 2-2 tie.
An even game saw the Falcons take 34 shots to the Yellowjackets' 33. Milliron finished with 31 saves while Fink tallied 32. Superior held a 33-30 edge in faceoffs.
Next up for River Falls is the regular season finale for the Falcons. They will play host to UW-Stout on Saturday, February 13, at Hunt Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
