Box Score OSHKOSH, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - On the road in a hostile environment, the UW- River Falls women's basketball team (10-2, 1-0 WIAC) knocked off the number 13 ranked UW- Oshkosh Titans 76-69, led by senior
Richell Mehus with a career high 30 points on 12-18 shooting.
In the first quarter of play, the Falcons scored the first six points of the game, and opened with a 13-2 run with four different players scoring in the first three and a half minutes in the game. UWRF stretched a lead to as much as 14 points before ending the quarter winning 20-12.
In the second quarter, the Falcons blew open a dominating lead of 21 points halfway through the second quarter leading 39-18 after a 19-8 run with eight of those points scored by Mehus.
The talented Titans clawed back in the game and at the halftime buzzer, the Falcons led 44-34 with Mehus scoring 22 points in the first half alone on 10-12 shooting.
Taylor Karge also had 13 in the first half on 6-9 shooting.
In the third quarter, it was a back and forth game between the two squads with the Falcons 10 point lead falling to as low as six points, but maintaining a lead going into the final quarter of play after a third quarter in which Oshkosh outscored the Falcons 15-12.
In the final quarter of play, UW- River Falls started with a huge three point shot by Mehus which set the tone of the quarter. UWRF ran out to a 12 point lead after a three pointer by
Katie Messman with 7:37 to go. For the next five minutes, both teams exchanged buckets and Oshkosh scored five straight points to cut the Falcon lead to just five points with 1:48 to go.
Two clutch free throws by
Kate Theisen the Falcons were back up by seven points with just over a minute to go, and eventually made enough free throws down the stretch to win the game by a score of 76-69 on the road.
With Mehus stealing the spotlight with 30 points, Karge scored 15 on the night and had six rebounds. Theisen scored 15 points and completed the double-double with 10 rebounds, four of which were offensive.
Katie Messman scored seven points,
Brynn Liljander scored four points and
Hannah Pignato and
Taylor Augustine had three and two points respectively.
On the night, UWRF shot 29-61 (47.5 percent) from the floor and made 4-13 shots from the three point line. The Falcons held UW- Oshkosh to 23-57 (40.4 percent) on the night and Oshkosh was unable to convert from the free throw line going 15-34 (44.1 percent) from the charity stripe.
UWRF was able to convert on second chance opportunities with 21 of their points coming on second chance shots. The Falcons did not trail in this game and had a lead of 21 points at one point in the game.
Next up for the Falcons is a road game against UW- Stout at 3 p.m. on January 9. The Falcons lead the all-time series 46-39 and split with the Blue Devils a season ago.Â
