The UW-River Falls Falcons had control of the game in the first half and despite a second half charge from UW-Stevens Point came out on top winning their road ballgame 69-64 moving their win streak to three.
UWRF won the first half of the ballgame, achieving a halftime lead of 36-31. The Falcons were in control for virtually the whole first half. The only lead the Pointers had was via a three-pointer from Lauren Anklam less than a minute into the game for a 3-2 lead.
The Falcons biggest lead of the half was 12 thanks to a three from Cassy Saxton to make it 19-7 with just over 10 minutes left in the half.
The Pointers came out ready to play in the second half coming out on a 7-1 run to tie the game up at 38-38. It looked like the Pointers would take over the game as they slowly built a lead in the front end of the second half.
With 9:47 left UWSP took a five point lead thanks to a Lexi Roland free throw. With 2:05 left, Kaitlyn Jacobs hit two free throws to make the Pointer lead five once again. Freshman Taylor Karge started the Falcon comeback right after that. Karge put in two layups in the course of forty seconds to get within two points with a minute left of the ballgame.
Only 28 seconds were left when the Falcons retook the lead. Katie Messman hit a huge three-pointer to make it a 65-64 lead. UWRF sealed the game with free throws with Jessie Van Wyhe and Messman sinking their four combined free throws in the closing seconds.
Karge had a career high 25 points in the victory for the Falcons. Messman was the only other player on the team to reach double-digits with her 11. Mickey Roland and Anklam were the high scorers for the Pointers with 13 and 12 respectively.
The victory is the second of the conference season for the Falcons, now standing at 2-5 in the WIAC and 7-9 overall. Stevens Point falls to 3-4 in conference and an 8-8 overall record.
The Falcons play their next game on Wednesday when they take on UW-Stout for a game tipping off at 7 p.m.
