Men's Basketball Stumbles Late In 58-51 Loss To Stevens Point

The UW-River Falls Falcons (6-10, 4-3 WIAC) played host to the No. 18 UW- Stevens Point Pointers (13-3, 7-0 WIAC) this evening and fell 58-51 in a game where there was six lead changes between the two teams and countless momentum swings.

The final score did not resemble the game as a whole. Neither team was able to pull away until the Pointers forced a turnover which lead to an easy dunk to extend the their lead to 54-47 with just under two minutes in the game.

The game's first basket was a three pointer courtesy of Falcon guard CJ Lewis as he was the spark plug the Falcons needed to get going. From there on it was a back and forth half that did not see many stoppages in play, as there was only five attempted free-throws between the two teams.

The second half started just as the first half had went, back and forth action between the two teams. Erickson was the go to player for the Falcons in the second half as he added eight more points to finish the game with a total of 12 points.

The pace of the game slowed down in the second half where there was much less transition style, and more traditional five on five half-court offense. The Pointers appeared to take control of the game after a basket and a foul to take a 34-33 lead with 15:10 remaining in the second half, but just seconds later Erickson answered with his own basket and a foul to regain the lead 36-33 in favor of the Falcons.

Pointers guard Joe Ritchay forced a turnover which lead to a slam dunk, but once again the Falcons answered back with a big three from junior forward Jack Herum to cut the Falcons deficit to 44-43 with just 7:40 remaining in the second half.

The Falcons defense was able to shut down Pointers guard Lutz much of the second half before he caught fire with two back to back three pointers with just under four minutes remaining in the second half to give the Pointers a 50-45 lead. The Falcons were able to cut the lead within three points with 2:20 remaining, but were not able to complete the comeback as they fell to the Pointers 58-51.

Erickson led the Falcons with 12 points as UWRF shot 43.5% from the field

Pointers leading scorer was Jordan Lutz with 24 points and shot 6-10 from the three point line.

The Falcons will play host to the UW- Stout Blue Devils (3-13, 0-7 WIAC) next Wednesday at Karges Center with tip off is set for 7 p.m.
