The UW-River Falls men's hockey team improved to 7-0 after a dramatic 4-3 overtime road victory over the Augsburg College Auggies on Tuesday evening thanks to a
Mike Williams game-winning-goal with 1:45 left in overtime.
The Auggies led the Falcons three times on Tuesday but UWRF had the last laugh after a
Mitch Kontny goal with 2:37 left in the third period to tie the game at three and Williams' overtime winner.
Auggies sophomore forward Corbin Chapman opened the scoring just 2:48 into the first period on an Augsburg power play. Chapman's second goal of the season was assisted by freshman forward Drew Anderson and junior forward Mack Ohnsted.
The Falcons rebounded quickly with a
Kyle Gattelaro power play goal at 8:06 of the first period. Gattelaro's second career goal was assited by freshman defenseman
Terry Leabo and sophomore forward
Ryan Doner. Leabo now has seven career assists in seven games. Doner upped his assist total to six. Augsburg outshot UWRF 12-8 in the first period. Both teams went 1-1 on the power play in the first.
Augsburg regained the lead on the power play midway through the second period with a goal from junior defenseman Lucas Hendrickson. Hendrickson's second goal of the season at 11:59 was assisted by senior defenseman Zach Dick.
UWRF tied the contest once again with 39 seconds left in the second period. Sophomore forward
Danny Hamburg scored his first goal in a Falcon uniform with assists to sophomore forward
Mike Fazio, his third, and sophomore defenseman
Jeff Bergh. The Auggies outshot UWRF 16-10 in the second period. Shots after two were 28-18 Auggies. Augsburg went 1-5 on the power play in the second, while UWRF went 0-1.
The Auggies took the lead, yet again, 6:12 into the third period with a goal from sophomore forward Dylan Meier. Meier's go-ahead-goal was assisted by senior forward Ben McClellan and freshman forward Evan Hesse.
Kontny rescued the Falcons with a goal at 17:23 of the third period with assists to senior forward
Blake Huppert and Bergh. Kontny's tying goal was his second. Huppert now has two assists on the season and Bergh has three. UWRF outshot the Auggies 11-5 in the third period. Shots after three were 33-29 Auggies. The Falcons went 0-2 on the power play in the third.
Williams' game-winning overtime goal at 3:15 was assisted by sophomore forward
Mike Dietrich. The goal was Williams' first of the season, while Dietrich upped his assist total to three. Overtime shots were 1-1. The Auggies outshot UWRF 34-30 on the evening.
Falcons junior defenseman
Alex Murphy led UWRF with four shots on goal. Falcons junior goaltender
Tanner Milliron (7-0) made 31 saves on the night. Auggies sophomore goaltender Fredrik Melander (3-2) made 26 saves in the loss. Milliron is now 11-2-3 in his career.
UWRF improves to 4-0 on the road. Augsburg falls to 5-3 overall and 1-1 at home. The Falcons are now 21-11-4 all-time against Augsburg.
The Falcons get nine days off before WIAC play begins on Thursday, Dec. 4, at home against the UW-Stout Bluedevils. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
