Mike Sandle won a national championship and two other Falcons earned All-American honors on Saturday at the
NCAA Meet held in Claremont, Calif.
The freshman won the triple jump championship on Saturday at the national meet giving him two national titles this year. Sandle jumped 51-2 1/4 to win the title on Saturday. At the NCAA indoor championships in March he won the indoor triple jump title with a leap of 50-6. At today's meet he hit his winning jump on his second attempt. His jump was five inches farther than the second place finisher. He also set a school record with Saturday's leap. He held the record of 49-1 1/2 set earlier this year.
Alyssa Rasmussen earned All-American honors in the 400 after another great race. She finished in 55.96 to place seventh. It was her third race in the meet - she had a time of 24.77 in the 200 prelims on Thursday. She ran the 400 prelims on Friday and finished that race in 56.45. The winning 400 time was 54.15. This is Rasmussen fourth All-American finish. In the 2010 indoor and 2010 outdoor seasons she was a member of the 4x400 relay team that earned the honor. She also earned the honor in this year's indoor season in the 400 with an eighth place finish with a time of 57.95.
Jared Brandenburg had another top race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He finished in 9:04.69 and placed eighth to earn All-American honors. It is the first time the senior has earned the honor.
Michael Woodward had a leap of 47-1 1/2 in the triple jump and he placed 14th in the 20 person field.
The Falcon 4x100 relay team of
James Butler, Sandle,
Jordan Crockett and Woodward placed ninth in the finals with a time of 41.47. They finished just .01 out of eighth place and All-American honors.
Becky Ponick had a throw of 118-feet in the javelin and placed 21st.
In the pole vault,
Kayla Hillman was not able to clear the first height she tried - 11-1 3/4.
The Falcon men's team scored 11 points and the women two. The men's team placed 22nd and the 11 points is the most ever scored by the men's team. The 1994 team scored 10 points. This is the sixth time the men's team has scored points at the NCAA Meet. This is the 19th time the Falcon women have scored points at the National Meet.
