Buchanan, Tusa Named NFCA All-Americans

Buchanan Named to First Team; Tusa to Second

Second baseman Hayley Buchanan and pitcher Rose Tusa were both named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America teams on Thursday.

Buchanan was named to the first team and Tusa to the second team. Buchanan is the first Falcon to ever be named to the first team. They join Emily Howlett who was named to the third team in 2008 as the only Falcons to be named NFCA All-Americans.

Buchanan, who was named to the 2012 first All-WIAC and 2012 NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams, hit .378 going 62-164 at the plate. The lead off hitter had a team-best 62 hits and 39 runs scored. She set a season record in games played (49) and at bats (164). Buchanan hit three homers and had 19 RBI. She had a great season in the field finishing the year with just one error in 186 chances. She had a .995 fielding percentage. She fashioned a 22-game hitting streak during the season. In 2010 and 2011 she earned honorable mention to the All-WIAC teams.

"It's a wonderful culmination of a great season to have Hayley Buchanan and Rose Tusa named as All-Americans," said Falcon Coach Faye Perkins. "Buchanan is a total player with great skill on both offense and defense. She has made a name for herself as the best defensive second base players in the WIAC and the Great Lakes Region--and now in the nation. She has incredible reflexes, reads the ball well, and makes plays that look impossible.  As our lead-off batter, she always puts the ball in play and makes things happen when she's up to bat."

Tusa, who earlier was named the WIAC Pitcher of the Year and to the first All-WIAC team, finished the season with a 27-8 record. The 27 wins is a school record for victories in a season. She also set season records for appearances (45), games started (38), strikeouts (245) and innings pitched (242). Tusa, who was named the 2011 WIAC Pitcher of the Year, finished this year with a 1.42 ERA. She was named to the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams and she was named to the first All-WIAC teams in 2010 and 2011 and earned honorable mention in 2009. Earlier this year she was named to the CoSIDA All-District 6 Academic All-America team sponsored by Capital One. Tusa now holds several career Falcon records including; appearances (145); earned run average (1.68); strike outs (741); innings pitched (697) and victories (75).

"Rose Tusa has been the "work horse" on the mound for the past four years at UWRF," said Perkins. "This past season, she pitched 242 of the total 333 innings--sometimes throwing three games in a day!  Not only can she throw around 60mph, she can also throw with a drop, inside screw ball, outside curve, rise, and a change-up. She's a phenomanal pitcher and it's great to see her get the recognition she deserves for the years of hard work that she has put into pitching."
