Softball Team Volunteers for Feed My Starving Children

On Dec. 13, players and coaches with the UWRF softball team went to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children in Eagan, Minn.

The team measured and packaged a mixture of chicken, soy, rice and vegetables to be sent to Uganda for malnourished children.

After about an hour of measuring and packing, the team packaged enough food to feed 52 children for an entire year.

Senior Haley Selkirk arranged the volunteer event.  She said it was important as student-athletes to give back.

“We here at UWRF have been blessed with so many opportunities, so this was just one way we could give back.  It was a fun event, didn't take much effort and we were able to make a difference for so many children,” Selkirk said.  This was the second year in a row that Selkirk arranged for the team to take the 45-minute trip to Eagan to volunteer.

Head Coach Faye Perkins noted that this wasn't a required team activity, but one where the entire team stepped up and decided to make a difference.

“I'm proud of the team for volunteering their time and energy for Feed My Starving Children.  As a team, we have talked about 'looking beyond yourself' and how 'you may be one person but as a group you can achieve great things.'  These apply to the team but they also apply to the larger world around us.  We have so much for which to be thankful and this is one small way of  'paying forward' to those who are less fortunate,” Perkins said.

A special thank you to Faye Perkins and Haley Selkirk for providing the photos.
