The UW-River Falls and UW-Stout women's basketball teams will be “Playing for the Cure” when the two long-time rivals meet Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. in Johnson Fieldhouse.
In addition to the always-fierce action on the court between the two teams, the event will include educational displays and tables by UW-Stout and community organizations to bring awareness to the continuing battle to fight breast cancer.
Before the game, Bob & Steve's BP Amoco Shops, on behalf of the UW-Stout and UW-River Falls women's teams, will make a major donation of $12,500 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation.
Bob & Steve's BP Amoco Shops received the funding through the BP Fueling Communities program. Bob & Steve's received the grant in the first year of the BP Fueling Communities program.
"The BP Fueling Communities fund makes it possible to not only bring attention to a great cause, but also help that cause financially,” Bob Michels, who along with Steve Jerlow is co-owner of Bob & Steve's BP Amoco Shops, said. “Together with the Falcon women's basketball team and the Lady Blue Devils, our company is pleased to support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation."
“It is a tremendous honor for our program to be a part of this program,” UW-Stout women's head coach Mark Thomas said.
“We really appreciate Bob & Steve's BP Amoco for helping our basketball programs be involved in bringing awareness and supporting the fight against breast cancer,” UW-River Falls women's head coach
Cindy Holbrook said. “UW-River Falls is proud to be part of this program.”
Fans from both teams are encouraged to wear pink to the game. Complimentary tickets for the game will be available at the Bob & Steve's BP Amoco Shops in Menomonie and River Falls.
BP Fueling Communities provides grant donations to local organizations that are nominated by local BP business owners to support the communities in which they do business. Fueling Communities gives back to local organizations that support health, education, youth, food and housing in order to spread charity and goodwill wherever it's needed most.
